Ethernet cable keeps disconnecting? Fix it in 3 steps
Your Ethernet cable keeps dropping connection. Start with a quick cable check, then drivers, then power settings. Most fixes take under 30 seconds.
30-Second Fix: Check the cable and ports
I know it sounds dumb, but I've had three clients this month who swore their cable was fine. It wasn't. One guy's cat chewed through it near the wall. Another had a screw pushing into the RJ45 connector inside the wall plate. First thing: wiggle the cable at both ends. If the light on your network port blinks or goes out, you've got a bad connection.
Look at the clip on the RJ45 plug. If it's broken, the cable won't lock in. Had a client last week in a warehouse — forklift ran over the cable, clip snapped. Cable looked fine but popped out every time someone walked past. Replace that cable. No clip? No connection.
Also check the port on your PC. Blow dust out. Use a flashlight. If the pins inside are bent or missing, the port's dead. I've seen cheap laptops where the port just falls off the motherboard after a year. If that's you, skip to the advanced section.
5-Minute Fix: Update or reset the network driver
Software issues cause disconnects more than hardware. Windows 10 and 11 love to override your driver with a generic one during updates. I had a client whose Ethernet dropped every 10 minutes — his Realtek driver got replaced by a Microsoft generic. Fix: Open Device Manager (right-click Start), find Network adapters, right-click your Ethernet adapter (Realtek, Intel, or whatever), choose Properties, go to Driver tab. Click Roll Back Driver if it's grayed out? Probably means you're already on the generic. Instead, download the exact driver from your motherboard or laptop manufacturer's site. Not from Windows Update. Not from a driver updater tool. From the manufacturer.
If you can't update, try this: in Device Manager, right-click the adapter, select Uninstall device, check "Delete the driver software for this device", then restart. Windows will reinstall a fresh copy. Worked for a client who said his cable was "loose in the software." His words, not mine.
Check the adapter's speed setting
A dirty trick: Windows might negotiate at 1 Gbps, but your cable can't handle it. Right-click the adapter in Network Connections, Properties, Configure, Advanced tab, find Speed & Duplex. Set it to 100 Mbps Full Duplex. If your internet is under 100 Mbps, you won't notice a difference. This stops the adapter from trying to sync at gigabit speeds and failing.
15-Minute Fix: Turn off power saving and check the cable inside the wall
Windows has a "feature" that turns off network adapters to save power. It's garbage. Turn it off. In Device Manager, right-click your Ethernet adapter, Properties, Power Management tab. Uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power." Do this for the USB Root Hub too if your Ethernet goes through USB (like USB-C adapters). Had a client whose Ethernet dropped every time his laptop went to sleep — this fixed it.
Now the cable inside the wall: If your cable runs through walls, check the keystone jacks. Common problem: the punch-down tool was used wrong. The wires should be pushed all the way in. If they're loose, the connection will drop under load. Use a cheap cable tester from Amazon ($15). If it shows a cross or open pair, re-terminate the jack. I keep a punch-down tool in my bag — costs $10, saves hours of guessing.
Last resort: check your switch or router port. Plug the cable into a different port. If it stays connected, the original port is dying. Switches fail. I've seen a Netgear GS108 lose one port at a time over weeks. If the port's dead, replace the switch. No point fighting hardware that's giving up.
Still dropping? Could be interference. Ethernet is shielded, but if you're running it next to power cables (like in a conduit), you'll get crosstalk. Move the cable 6 inches away from power. Or use shielded cable (STP) if you're in a noisy environment like an office with fluorescent lights.
Real talk: if you've done all this and it still disconnects, your motherboard's Ethernet port might be failing. Happens on older Dell Optiplex systems. Buy a USB-to-Ethernet adapter for $15. They work fine for most people.
