Fan Speed Below Minimum Threshold – Real Fix for BIOS & Software
Your PC fan is stuck slow and you're getting a warning. Here's the real fix: update BIOS, check fan cables, and reset fan curves.
Yeah, that warning is annoying. You boot up your PC, and a message like "CPU Fan Speed Below Minimum Threshold" or "System Fan Error" pops up. Sometimes it won't even let you into Windows. Let's fix it.
Quick Fix: Check BIOS Fan Settings
- Restart your PC. Mash the Delete key (or F2, depending on your motherboard) to enter BIOS setup. On ASUS boards, it's Delete. On MSI, it's F2. On Gigabyte, it's F2 or Delete. You'll see the BIOS screen within a few seconds.
- Look for a section called "Monitor", "Hardware Monitor", "PC Health Status", or "Fan Control". On ASUS, it's often under "Monitor" or "Q-Fan Control". On MSI, it's under "Hardware Monitor". On Gigabyte, it's "PC Health Status".
- Find your fan headers. Usually labeled CPU Fan, System Fan 1, System Fan 2, etc. If you have a CPU fan warning, focus on CPU Fan.
- Set the fan control mode for that header from "PWM" (4-pin) to "DC" (3-pin) or vice versa. Here's the trick: if your fan has a 4-pin connector but you set it to DC, the fan might run slow and trigger the warning. If it's a 3-pin fan and set to PWM, same issue. Try switching it.
- Also look for a setting called "Fan Speed Low Limit" or "Minimum Fan Speed". Set it to "Ignore" or lower it to 100 RPM or 200 RPM. This tells the motherboard to stop complaining even if the fan is spinning slowly.
- Press F10 to save and exit. Your PC will reboot. You should see the warning gone.
After you do this, the warning usually disappears. But if it doesn't, keep reading.
Why This Works
Motherboards have a built-in safety check. They expect the fan to spin at a certain speed (like 300 RPM minimum). If the fan is slower—maybe because it's a new undervolted fan or an old one that's wearing out—the board thinks something's broken. By setting the limit to "Ignore" or lowering it, you're telling the board, "I know what I'm doing, stop yelling."
Also, the fan control mode mismatch is a classic. Most modern fans are 4-pin PWM. But if you plug a 3-pin fan into a 4-pin header set to PWM, the fan runs at full speed or weird speeds. Same issue the other way. Switching the mode matches the fan's actual wiring.
When BIOS Settings Don't Fix It
Sometimes the BIOS fix doesn't stick. Or you still get the warning after boot. Try these:
1. Loose Fan Cable
Pop open your case. Unplug the fan cable from the motherboard header. Wait 5 seconds. Plug it back in firmly. Push it all the way until you feel a click. A loose connection can cause the fan to spin slow or not at all, triggering the warning.
2. Fan on Wrong Header
Check if your CPU fan is plugged into a "System Fan" header instead of "CPU Fan". Some motherboards require a fan on the CPU fan header to even boot. Move the cable to the correct header. If you don't have a spare header, you can buy a splitter cable.
3. Fan Is Dying
If the fan spins slowly even at 100% speed in BIOS, it might be failing. Bearings wear out. Replace the fan. A cheap $10 fan can save you hours of frustration.
4. Software Override
Windows software like FanControl, SpeedFan, or your motherboard's app (ASUS AI Suite, MSI Afterburner, Gigabyte SIV) can set a custom fan curve. If you set a low speed curve and the fan doesn't hit the BIOS minimum, you'll get the warning. Open those apps, reset the fan curve to default, and save. Then reboot and see if it's gone.
Less Common Causes
- Bad BIOS update. If you just updated your BIOS and this started happening, roll back to the previous version. Sometimes new BIOS revisions change fan speed thresholds.
- Dust in fan. Clean the fan blades with compressed air. Dust can slow the fan down enough to trigger the warning.
- Fan hub or splitter failure. If you're using a fan hub or a Y-splitter cable, test without it. Plug the fan directly into the motherboard header. If the warning goes away, the hub or splitter is broken.
Prevention for Next Time
Two things: Use quality fans. Cheap fans die fast. And when you build or upgrade, always plug the CPU fan into the CPU fan header. That's the header that's required for boot. Also, after you set your fan curve in BIOS, save a profile. Most modern boards let you save BIOS profiles. That way if you reset the BIOS, you can load your settings back in seconds.
One more thing: Some motherboards have a "Fan Fail Warning" option. You can disable it entirely in the BIOS if you're sure your fans are working. Look for that setting in the Monitor section. Disable it, and you won't see the warning again even if the fan runs slow. But only do this if you know the fans are fine.
That's it. You should be back to a quiet, warning-free boot. If you still see the error after all this, try a different fan header or a new fan. Nine times out of ten, it's one of these fixes.
