Printer Says Maintenance Cartridge Full: Quick Fix

1. Reset the maintenance counter (most common fix)

Nine times out of ten, your printer isn't actually full. It's a counter that keeps track of how many times the printer cleaned itself. After a few hundred cleanings, that counter hits a limit. Then it stops you from printing.

Here's the fix:

1. Turn your printer off. Unplug the power cord from the wall. Wait 60 seconds.
2. Plug it back in. Turn it on.
3. While the printer is turning on, press and hold the "Stop" button (red triangle) and the "Power" button together for 10 seconds.
4. When the printer makes a noise or the lights flash, release both buttons.
5. You should see the display show "Maintenance mode" or a reset prompt. Some Epson models show "Waste ink pad counter" or "Maintenance box reset".

After this, try printing a test page. If it prints, you're done. The counter is reset. The real waste ink is still in the pads, but you just bought yourself another 6 months to a year before it fills up again.

But be careful. If you reset the counter too many times, the ink pads can overflow and leak ink inside your printer. That can damage the printer board or stain your desk. Only reset twice max before replacing the pads.

2. Replace the maintenance cartridge (Epson models mostly)

Some newer Epson WorkForce and EcoTank models have a separate maintenance cartridge you can swap. It's a little box that slides in from the front or side. Look for a slot labeled "Maintenance tank" or "Waste ink box".

What to do:

1. Open the front cover of your printer. Some models need you to lift the scanner unit too.
2. Find the maintenance cartridge. It's usually white or black, about the size of a deck of cards.
3. Press the release tab and pull it out. Watch for dripping ink. Have paper towels ready.
4. Take the new cartridge. Peel off the plastic wrap. Slide it in until it clicks.
5. Close the cover. Your printer should recognize the new cartridge and clear the error.

You can buy these cartridges online for about $10 to $20. Search for your printer model and the words "maintenance box" or "waste ink tank". Don't buy third-party ones that look different. Stick with genuine parts.

3. Replace the waste ink pads (Brother, Canon, HP models)

If your printer doesn't have a separate cartridge, the waste ink soaks into foam pads inside the printer. When those pads are full, the printer gives you the "maintenance cartridge full" error. You have to open the printer and swap them.

This is a bit more work. Here's how:

1. Unplug the printer. Open the scanner lid. Remove any paper from the tray.
2. Look for screws on the bottom or back of the printer. Remove them with a small Phillips-head screwdriver.
3. Lift off the top cover or the scanner unit. You'll see the print head moving area. Underneath, there are foam pads usually held in by a plastic clip or tape.
4. Take out the old pads. They'll be dark and wet with ink. Don't touch the ink with bare hands. Wear latex gloves.
5. Put in new pads. You can buy generic waste ink pads for your printer model on Amazon for $5 to $15. Some people use folded paper towels as a temporary fix, but that's risky — the ink can soak through and damage the printer board.
6. Put everything back together. Tighten screws. Close covers.
7. Now reset the counter. Use the button method from step 1 above. Or look up your model's specific reset code online. Brother models often need a different button combo: hold down "Menu" and "#" while turning on.

After replacing the pads and resetting the counter, print a test page. If the error comes back immediately, double-check that the counter reset worked. Some printers reset the counter only after you press a specific "OK" button in maintenance mode.
