Wi-Fi Drops When Bluetooth Devices Connect – Fix for Windows 10/11
Your Wi-Fi keeps cutting out the second you pair a Bluetooth gadget. It's a known interference issue. Here's the real fix in a few steps.
You're in the middle of a video call or streaming something. Then you pair your Bluetooth headphones or connect a wireless mouse. Seconds later, your Wi-Fi drops – or gets painfully slow. The connection comes back only after you disconnect the Bluetooth device. Sound familiar?
This happens a lot on Windows laptops with Intel or Realtek Wi-Fi cards. It's not a router problem or a bad driver. The real cause is something called Bluetooth coexistence – a feature that's supposed to help both radios work together, but often makes things worse.
Why does this happen?
Wi-Fi and Bluetooth both use the same 2.4 GHz frequency band. When both are active, your computer's radio chip tries to share time between them. This sharing is handled by a setting called Bluetooth coexistence mode. In some cases, this mode tells the Wi-Fi to pause or slow down when Bluetooth is active. The result? Your Wi-Fi drops out entirely or becomes unusable.
This isn't a hardware defect. It's a software setting that's too aggressive. The fix is to turn off or adjust that coexistence mode. On Windows 10 and 11, you can do this through the Device Manager.
How to fix it – step by step
- Open Device Manager. Right-click the Start button and select Device Manager.
- Find your Wi-Fi adapter. Expand the Network adapters section. Look for something like

orRealtek RTL8822BE
. - Open its properties. Right-click the Wi-Fi adapter and choose Properties.
- Go to the Advanced tab. You'll see a list of properties.
- Find Bluetooth Coexistence settings. Look for one of these names:

Bluetooth Coexistence Support
BT Coexistence
- Change the value. Set it to
Disabled
orPre-emptive
. On some Intel cards,Pre-emptive
works better because it lets Wi-Fi take priority. Test both if needed. - Apply and restart. Click OK, then restart your computer.
That's usually it. After the restart, pair your Bluetooth device again. Your Wi-Fi should stay connected.
If you don't see the setting
Some adapters hide these options. Here's a workaround:
- Open Device Manager again.
- Expand Bluetooth and find your Bluetooth adapter (often named the same as your Wi-Fi chip).
- Right-click it, go to Properties > Advanced.
- Look for
Bluetooth Coexistence
orWi-Fi Coexistence
. Disable it there.
If you still can't find it, you might need to update your Wi-Fi driver from the manufacturer's website – not from Windows Update. Grab the latest driver from Intel or Realtek's support page. Sometimes older drivers hide these settings.
What else can cause this?
If the coexistence fix doesn't help, check these:
- USB 3.0 devices near your laptop. They can leak interference at 2.4 GHz. Move them away.
- Microwave or cordless phone nearby. Yes, those still exist.
- Router placement. If your laptop is far from the router, 2.4 GHz is weaker and more prone to drops. Try moving closer.
- Switch to 5 GHz Wi-Fi. If your router supports it, connect to the 5 GHz band. Bluetooth only uses 2.4 GHz, so the conflict disappears.
One more thing – if you're using a USB Bluetooth dongle, try plugging it into a USB 2.0 port instead of USB 3.0. That alone fixed it for me on a Dell XPS 13 once.
When all else fails
If the drops keep happening after these steps, your Wi-Fi adapter might just be a bad match for your Bluetooth device. Some cheap Bluetooth mice and keyboards are noisy. Try a different brand. I've seen Logitech's Unifying receiver work better than built-in Bluetooth for some people.
