Your Monitor Says 'No Signal' – How to Fix It Fast

The 30-Second Fix: Check the Basics
Okay, you're staring at a black screen with that lovely "No Signal" message. Don't panic. Most of the time, it's something dumb. Had a client last month who swore his PC was dead – turned out his cat knocked the HDMI cable loose. Saved him a $100 service call.
Step 1: Power cycle your monitor.
- Unplug the monitor's power cord from the wall or surge protector.
- Wait 30 seconds. Yes, actually count to 30. The capacitors need to drain.
- Plug it back in and turn it on. See if the error goes away.
Step 2: Check the video cable.
- Make sure it's pushed all the way into both the monitor and the PC. HDMI, DisplayPort, DVI – whatever you're using. Give it a firm push. You should feel a click.
- Try a different port on your graphics card (GPU) or motherboard. If you have two HDMI ports on the GPU, switch which one you're using.
- If you have a spare cable, swap it. Cables fail. It's cheap and fast to test.
Step 3: Make sure the monitor is on the right input.
Hit the monitor's menu button (usually on the side or bottom). Look for Input Source or Source. Make sure it's set to whatever cable you're using – HDMI 1, HDMI 2, DisplayPort, etc. I've seen people panic for 10 minutes only to realize the monitor was set to VGA when they were using HDMI.
If none of that works, move to the next section.
The 5-Minute Fix: Reseat Your RAM
This is the one that saves my bacon more than any other. Faulty RAM or bad contact between RAM and the motherboard can cause the system to POST but not output a signal. Happens all the time.
What you'll need: A Phillips-head screwdriver (if you need to open the case) and your hands.
Step 1: Power down completely.
- Shut down the PC properly (if you can). If you can't because it's stuck, hold the power button until it shuts off.
- Unplug the power cord from the back of the power supply. No shortcuts – you need zero power going through.
- Press the power button a few times to discharge any leftover juice in the capacitors.
Step 2: Open the case.
Take off the side panel. Usually two screws at the back. Slide it off toward the rear.
Step 3: Locate the RAM sticks.
They're the long skinny sticks plugged into the motherboard, usually near the CPU. They have little clips on both ends.
Step 4: Remove and reseat each stick.
- Press the clips down on both ends of a RAM stick. It should pop up slightly.
- Pull it straight out. Be gentle but firm.
- Look at the gold contacts at the bottom. If they look dirty, rub them gently with a clean pencil eraser. Sounds weird, but it works. Just a light pass.
- Line the stick up with the slot. The notch in the middle has to match the slot.
- Push it down firmly until the clips snap back into place on both ends. You want it fully seated.
Step 5: Try with one stick.
If you have two sticks (most people do), try booting with just one at a time. Sometimes one stick is bad. Remove the second stick entirely. If the system boots with one stick, you found the bad one. Had a client last week whose PC wouldn't show anything – turned out one of his RAM sticks had died. Replaced it, signal came back instantly.
Step 6: Close it up and test.
Plug the power back in, connect the monitor, and turn it on. Still no signal? Let's go deeper.
The 15+ Minute Fix: Reset the BIOS and Check the Graphics Card
This is where you're ruling out BIOS corruption or a loose GPU. Should take 15-20 minutes, but worth it.
Resetting the BIOS (CMOS clear)
The BIOS stores all your hardware settings. If it got corrupted (bad overclock, power surge, etc.), it might stop outputting a signal. Clearing it resets everything to factory defaults.
Method A: Remove the CMOS battery (easiest).
- Still have the case open and power unplugged? Good.
- Find the little silver coin-cell battery on the motherboard. Looks like a watch battery. It's about the size of a quarter.
- Carefully push the metal clip holding it to one side. The battery should pop up.
- Wait 60 seconds. I mean it – set a timer. Some boards hold charge for a while.
- Put the battery back in the same orientation (flat side up, usually).
Method B: Use the CMOS jumper (if your board has one).
Some motherboards have a jumper labeled CLR_CMOS or something similar. Check your manual. Short the two pins with a screwdriver for 10 seconds. That does the same thing as removing the battery. Faster, but you need the manual.
After you've cleared the BIOS, plug everything back in and try booting. If it works now, your BIOS was messed up. You might need to update it later, but for now, you're back in business.
Check the graphics card (GPU)
If the monitor still says no signal, it's time to reseat the GPU.
- Unplug the power from the PC again.
- Unscrew the GPU from the case bracket (usually one or two screws on the back of the case near the ports).
- Press the little release clip on the PCIe slot. It's at the end of the slot, opposite the ports.
- Gently but firmly pull the GPU straight out. If it doesn't come out, you missed the clip.
- Clean the gold contacts on the GPU the same way you did with the RAM – a clean eraser works.
- Reinstall it firmly, screw it back in, and plug the power cables back into it (if it has any).
Try onboard graphics (if your CPU has it)
If you have a CPU with integrated graphics (like Intel's non-F chips or most AMD Ryzen G series), pull the GPU out entirely and plug your monitor directly into the motherboard's video ports. If you get a signal now, your GPU is dead or acting up. Had a client whose gaming PC just stopped working – turned out the GPU had died silently. Swapped it out, and the onboard graphics worked fine.
If none of this works, you're probably looking at a dead motherboard or CPU. That's a bigger problem. But honestly, 90% of the time, it's one of the things above. Good luck.
